Unfamiliar with the styles of music showcased on Communion After Dark? Europe spearheads these styles, which unfortunately receive little exposure in the United States. Though definitions of these genres can be debatable, as is which artist goes with which, the following entries (some by Wikipedia) give a starting point for understanding the genres.

Check out the DJ picks   section for ideas on what to purchase next!

EBM
Electronic Body Music (EBM) was a genre born during the mid 80’s from the fusion of electro and industrial styles. EBM was originated by the work of the Belgian band Front 242, whom used the term for the very first time in the release of their first 12" release “Endless Riddance” in 1983. Sample artists: Solitary Experiments, Assemblage 23.

SYNTH POP
Synth pop is characterised by the mechanical rhythms from drum machines, and the use of synthesizers. Melody is often key with this form. Sample artists: Wolfsheim, Lavantgarde.

DARK ELECTRO
The term describes the sinister sounds of electronic music, often with complex compositions arranged and blended with horror soundscapes and distortions. Sample artists: Suicide Commando, Tactical Sekt.

POWER NOISE
This style, also known as rhythmic noise, typically uses militaristic 4/4 beats, and is often instrumental. Sometimes a melodic component is added, but this is usually secondary to the rhythm. Power noise tracks are typically structured and danceable, but are known to be occasionally abstract. Sample artists: SAM, S.K.E.T.

Having difficultly locating where to buy this music? Since most stores in the U.S. don’t stock music from the genres we play it can be a real pain, but you can go our route: mail order. We use the online store Isolation Tank. Many labels, such as Metropolis Records, also offer CDs, and most have posted their libraries on their own sites or at the major digital outlets, such as iTunes, Amazon, etc.
